3 BIM Team Roles and Responsibilities

Any company is as good as its people. In the construction sector today, where BIM Services has become the norm it is essential that a BIM Company takes a hard look at its employees and ensures that the team is working optimally. There are obviously some roles which are more defined like the BIM Lead who manages the different teams or the BIM modeler who helps in running the projects efficiently. There are some salient roles which are not defined but need to be taken up by the members in order to ensure the highest team performance. Below we take a look at three such responsibilities any individual or a group must take up in a BIM team.
1. The Motivator:
The construction Industry is not one of the most technologically advanced sector. It is only in the recent times that they have started to adapt more technologies to advance into the digital age. Building Information Modeling has at the center of it. It provides the AEC professionals all the tools to design, construct and manage buildings. It is moreover always updating, there are new workflow methodologies, new approaches that are constantly taking place in BIM process for better collaboration, clash detection etc. Everyone working in the BIM team might not always be aware about the latest advancements. It is up to the motivator to look at his team members and encourage them to be updated. He should lead by example, always learning and expanding his horizons and in turn motivating people around him to do the same. He could participate in conferences, webinars and industry events so as to remain on top of the new trends and technologies. Moreover, they should constantly test for new solutions, methodologies etc. and then pass along what they have learnt to either the team member or the educator.
2. The Educator:
Once the motivator identifies the new trends the next is teaching the BIM Team all about it. With fast pace of the construction environment driving exceptional quality and service should be the main goal of any BIM company. It is for this that is essential that all the team members know how to use the new methodologies, plug-ins etc. The primary task of the educator would be to ensure that all the team members are properly trained in application of the tools. They can work with the supervisor to identify what are the competencies of each team member and then organize training and workshops. There could be more than one educator in the team depending on the size of the company.
3. The Planner:
The planner has a more defined set of responsibilities, namely analyzing requirements and making a plan based on it. The planner must work with the BIM Lead to recognize the requirements of the client and preparing a BEP (BIM Execution Plan) to ensure that the project is done in the required timeframe. It would mean knowing the strengths of each member of team and assigning them with tasks. They will also have to look at the available resources and ensure that they have the necessary hardware and software requirements. They also need to ensure that they are on the right track and see if any adjustments have to be made to the strategy to ensure that the project is completed on time.
Conclusion:
The following might be a few core responsibilities that may need to be taken up by a person or a group. They are however not completely definite and fully flexible. The roles and responsibilities need to be reviewed and changes should be made as per the need of the BIM Company.
